Clear, beautiful skin starts from the inside (surprise!). But it stays that way by doing a lot more. Before becoming a naturopathic doctor I personally struggled with adult acne and constantly unpredictable skin. After taking a natural approach changed my skin for good, I wanted to share some easy-fixes to keep your face and body glowing too!
Clean, don’t over-clean
This is a big one. When we experience breakouts we often want to ‘scrub them away’. However, stripping our skin of essential oils on the surface actually signals the body to produce more oil (yikes!). I know its counter-intuitive, but the harsher the cleanser, the worse this viscous cycle can become. Instead, use a natural, fragrance-free cleanser in the morning and evening. Look for a cream based product if you have drier, flakier skin, or one containing tea-tree oil if your breakouts are the main issue. Either way, ALWAYS moisturize after cleaning to keep your skin hydrated without over-stimulating its own oil production.
Boost your healthy fats
Of course food has to be part of a clear skin plan! Many women are still counting calories (and worse, fat content) when we should be counting healthy fats instead. These keep the skin hydrated from within, are anti-inflammatory and generally keep your skin smoother and younger looking –who doesn’t want that?? Try to include 3 servings every day from things like coconut oil, avocado, extra virgin olive oil or an omega-3 supplement. Worried you’ll gain weight? Healthy fats keep you full longer and help to prevent spikes in blood sugar—it’s not uncommon to actually lose weight while eating more of these nutritious super foods!
My secret (or not-so-secret) to clear skin after you feel like you’ve tried EVERYTHING. Doing a proper detox is a natural way of clearing out the liver and many of the stored toxins and built-up hormones that are wrecking havoc on your skin. It means eating clean, avoiding harsh things like alcohol and caffeine as well as including more water in your diet to flush things out. A detox is NOT the same thing as a cleanse (and should not keep you in the bathroom all day). Why not try my free 3 day detox to get started right now?
No matter how healthy your diet or pure your skincare regime is, if you’re overly stressed it WILL show up on your skin (sorry, but its true!). Taking time for regular stress reduction and self-care is vital for keeping your skin clear and glowing. Whether that’s in the form of journaling, exercise or a regular Epsom salt bath, stop putting yourself last on your priority list and see what an impact it has on your skin!
What are you going to start doing today for better skin tomorrow?
