It’s that time of year again– detox season! After a long summer of indulgences our bodies could use a chance to clear out the old & make room for the new. If you’re looking to boost your energy, improve your digestion or lose a few extra pounds, a detox might be exactly what you need. Better yet, why not add in a few herbal support products to kick your detox into high gear?
What is a detox
The process of detoxification is a natural function of the human body, mainly carried out by the liver. It allows us to safely get rid of toxins and chemicals that build up in our system from our food and our environment. While our liver already knows how to detoxify on its own, giving it a bit of extra help will ensure things keep moving out efficiently and our body doesn’t get overloaded. At the very least I recommend an annual 7-21 day detox, usually in the fall or spring, to help reset the body. Let’s delve in a bit deeper into how we can use food and supplements during this time to achieve maximum results.
Detoxing with foods
The staple of any detox program should always include a cleaner diet. In my practice (and during my personal detoxes) I avoid all gluten, dairy, refined sugars, alcohol and caffeine. If you’ve done a detox before you may also consider avoiding eggs, peanuts, soy and corn (since these are common food sensitivities and are harder on the system to process). Either way, the goal is to stick a mostly plant-based diet made up of whole foods and some lean proteins. Be sure to also include a few detox-boosting foods like beet juice, lemons, parsley and broccoli to your routine.
How can herbs help
Supplements like vitamins, minerals and herbs can help provide your liver with additional support in order to make the detox more effective. Taking a high-quality multivitamin or a activated B complex are great places to start. However, when it comes to liver support, herbs steal the show! Things like milk thistle, dandelion and burdock are excellent cleansers, especially when taken daily as a liquid in a combination formula. They work to help regenerate the liver, while helping to excrete waste products that have built up over time.
If you want a complete all-in-one approach that works on your liver, kidneys and digestive system, an all-seasons detox kit (check them out here) may be the way to go. This contains different herbal combinations for the different organ systems and usually takes about 3 weeks to complete.
Keep in mind, choosing high-quality herbal supplements is very important (and in liquid format whenever possible for better absorption). Be consistent and watch how your health improves after a few short detox weeks!
