Every week I see women in my private practice dealing with the aftermath of taking the pill, or simply years spent dealing with unbalanced hormones. Whether acne, weight gain, horrible periods or crazy mood swings, I explain that it IS possible to get your hormone levels in check naturally! Just because these symptoms are common, does NOT make them normal (sorry!).
So when I stumbled across the @mymoonbox account on instagram I was soooo happy to see a powerful woman who got her own hormonal system healthy AND is now helping other women do the same!
Check out her journey & let this be an inspiration to make health your top priority!
What has your journey with hormone balance been like up until this point in your life?
Nikki: Looking back, it was definitely a lonely & challenging journey to begin with, but one I’m actually so grateful for it as it’s what lead me to discovering my life’s passion and to starting up Moonbox– so I wouldn’t change a thing!
I had always suffered from horrible PMS crazy dragon lady mood swings which were then followed by days of crippling period pain – curled up in a foetus position, clutching onto a hot water bottle, demolishing one too many blocks of Cadbury and overdosing on painkillers. Unfortunately this story is all too common for women.
Like most of my girlfriends, our doctors solution to any period problem was the pill. So just like a rite of passage, that’s what I did, no questions asked, I took the pill for 6 years only to wave goodbye to a few days of cramps and welcome in a whole array of other symptoms that plagued me daily. Waves of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, weight gain, fatigue, chronic thrush & IBS – I thought that something was wrong with me, I would do everything to “be happy & healthy” – journaling, meditation, affirmations, exercising, eating right, yet I always felt this cloud over my head and I was completely unaware of its connection to the pill, until the day I stopped taking it.
Within a few weeks of my life without the pill, it was as if that dark cloud had been lifted and the old me was back, the Nikki I had been trying so hard to be for so many years pre-pill days. It was so obvious to me that the pill had been causing me these symptoms for so long and I was actually angry about it, I wasn’t crazy after all! However my cramps and PMS returned in full swing, and it wasn’t long after I also developed hypothyroidism & been diagnosed with Leaky Gut. But this time, instead of relying on a conventional pill, I intuitively knew that there had to be something I could personally do. So I began reading A LOT, which then lead me to studying Nutritional Health Science which was an absolute game changer for me. I learnt about getting to the root causes of my symptoms, how to heal imbalances with food and the importance of a holistic approach encompassing all mind, body and spirit when it comes to achieving optimal hormone and overall health. I became obsessed with everything periods and hormones, because I got to a place where I no longer had any menstrual symptoms and I wanted every other girl to experience the same. And this is what inspired me to start Moonbox, to put together all of my knowledge and develop specific products to help support women throughout their cycle, relieving symptoms naturally and for the long term – without the pill, surgery or drugs! So, now I’m on a whole new journey where I want to empower as many women as I can to take control of their own menstrual health and to make sure it’s not a lonely journey for anyone!
What do you wish you would have known about hormonal birth control earlier on in your life?
Nikki: Oh so many things I wish I knew! Firstly, I wish I knew that it completely switched off my own body’s natural production of hormones and replaced them with their synthetic versions! If my doctor had told me this at the beginning I swear I wouldn’t have touched the pill with a ten foot pole!
Secondly, this may sound obvious but I really wish I knew that the pill is a huge cause of anxiety and depression. I really suffered for too long thinking there was something wrong with me.
Thirdly, and this one I remember blew my mind when I first heard it – that the period you get on the pill is not actually a real period but a withdrawal bleed from the pills hormones.
The list could go on…
Who (or what) has helped you most along your health journey?
Nikki: Eating wholefoods whilst cutting out gluten, dairy & sugar has changed my life and transformed my health – my thyroid is balanced and period suffering gone!
Acupuncture – my absolutely go-to for balancing emotions and my hormones.
Yoga – in helping me feel more aligned, and connected to my body and breath; which also improved my digestive health dramatically. I think a lot of us with digestive issues forget how much our emotions impact our gut. How we digest life is how we digest food – this was a missing foundation for me!
My college studies, books and podcasts helped BIG time!
If you had to choose just 1 key to better hormonal balance, what would it be?
Nikki: I would say, learn to really tune in & listen to your own body; any symptoms you experience are your body’s way of trying to get your attention and communicate an inner imbalance that needs addressing. Whether it be period pain, acne, irregular periods, heavy bleeding – each time you ignore these symptoms, or cover them up with a quick pill – they will only become worse or manifest as other symptoms within the body. Start with the foundations – food, water, quality sleep, movement, stress management, reducing toxins…don’t overcomplicate things by listening to every health craze. You are the key to your own hormonal health.
